Of all the Guns N’ Roses songs for a female-fronted punk band to cover, “Used to Love Her” might be the least likely candidate. With its gleeful refrain of, “I used to love her, but I had to kill her,” The acoustic power ballad from 1988’s G N’ R Lies is hard to read as anything other than blatantly misogynistic (and also kind of silly). But all that didn’t stop Vancouver’s White Lung from breaking out their acoustic guitars and covering the song live during a recent performance at Sirius XMU. Vocalist Mish Barber-Way maintains a straight face all the way through the cover, turning the song into something slightly more complex and confrontational than the original. Check it out below:
White Lung released their latest LP, Paradise, last month. It recently made the long list for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, awarded to the best album of the year by a Canadian artist.
