Javier Bardem in talks to play Frankenstein in Universal’s Monsters cinematic universe

Oscar-winning actor could join Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Johnny Depp in the monster films

Universal Pictures may have found their next Frankenstein. Variety reports that Javier Bardem is in negotiations to join Universal’s cinematic universe featuring their classic Hollywood monsters.

The magazine says that the Oscar-winning actor is in line to fill the role of Frankenstein, though sticklers will note they neglect to specify if that’s Doctor Frankenstein or Frankenstein’s famous undead monster. Still, it seems likely that they’re talking about the green composite creature.

It’s possible that Bardem will make his debut in the role in a film prior to leading his own feature. The Mummy is currently wrapping filming now with Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, while Johnny Depp’s The Invisible Man looks to start filming within the next few months. Universal is also developing a Bride of Frankenstein film, though it’s unclear if that film would serve as Bardem’s first appearance in the series.

Funnily enough, Bardem was originally offered the role of Dr. Jekyll, but opted to pass. The part eventually went to Crowe, next to whom Bardem will now apparently star.

Last year, Universal revealed plans for a connective cinematic universe featuring all of its iconic creatures, such as the Mummy, the Wolfman, Frankenstein, and others. Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Chris Morgan (Furious 7, Fast 8) are shepherding the franchises.
