Jeff Nichols says sup to the Academy with sweeping trailer for Loving — watch

Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga lead a true story of an interracial marriage put into jeopardy

This past Spring, Jeff Nichols took us on a wild ride with the sci-fi drama, Midnight Special. Come November, he’ll return with what looks like his most surefire Oscar contender yet: the interracial marriage drama, Loving.

The film is based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who were married in June of 1958. That marriage, however, lead to the authorities breaking into their home, arresting them, and eventually exiling the two from the state of Virginia. For nine years, the troubled couple fought their way back home.

Joel Edgerton (Black Mass) and Ruth Negga (12 Years a Slave) play the two principal leads and head a striking supporting cast that includes Nick Kroll, Jon Bass, Marton Csokas, Bill Camp, and, of course, Michael Shannon. Nichols’ longtime collaborator and our recipient of 2015’s Performance of the Year, will be playing a LIFE photographer who shot photos of the couple in 1965.

Nichols took inspiration for the film from Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary The Loving Story, which originally aired on HBO. Buirski serves as a producer alongside Sarah Green, Colin Firth, Ged Doherty, Peter Saraf, and Marc Turtletaub. While Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Jack Turner, and Jared Ian Goldman will serve as executive producers.

Loving hits theaters November 4th. Catch the trailer above.
