New concept art suggests Michael Keaton will play Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Batman and Beetlejuice actor signs on to play the villain in Marvel's upcoming superhero film

Batman just can’t escape the spider’s web.

Back in April, reports surfaced that Michael Keaton was in talks to play the bad guy in the forthcoming Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures film Spider-Man: Homecoming. When a deal closed later that month to bring Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man back for the picture, Keaton bowed out of discussions. Apparently there was concern on both ends that with Downey Jr. on board, there wouldn’t be enough funds to hire Keaton.

After attempting to move on to other actors, however, it now appears that Marvel and Sony have come up with terms to please both studio execs and Keaton. According to Variety, the Birdman star is now in final negotiations to portray the villain opposite Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Update: In new concept art released by Marvel, the Vulture faces off against Spider-Man. While there’s no confirmation, it would appear Keaton is playing the Vulture in the forthcoming film.

Holland recently made his warmly received debut as the web-slinger in Captain America: Civil War, a blockbuster of a film that just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Marisa Tomei also appeared as Aunt May for the first time in that movie. If Keaton’s deal closes, he’ll join both actors as well as Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Laura Harrier. It’s unknown at this time which costumed baddie from Spider-Man’s long list of adversaries Keaton would portray.

Director Jon Watts is set to start directing from John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein’s screenplay this June, with Sony’s Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige producing.
