Blood Orange performs “Augustine” and “Thank You” on Conan — watch

Dev Hynes' devastatingly beautiful performance also served as a tribute to police shooting victims

Dev Hynes’ latest album as Blood Orange, Freetown Sound, contains some of his most expansive material yet. As our own David Sackllah writes, it “stands concurrently as a deeply personal work and a striking representation of the struggles present in today’s society,” which isn’t always the kind of thing that translates to late-night television. Nevertheless, Hynes gave a striking performance last night on Conan, giving “Augustine” and “Thank You” all the room it needed to breathe, and making the late-night stage feel like the intimate bedroom on the album’s cover. Along with choreographed backing dancers, Hynes’ performance included a photo tribute to Terrance Mack, Philando Castile, and Hande Kader, all of whom were victims of police shootings. Watch the replay above.
