Dev Hynes’ latest album as Blood Orange, Freetown Sound, contains some of his most expansive material yet. As our own David Sackllah writes, it “stands concurrently as a deeply personal work and a striking representation of the struggles present in today’s society,” which isn’t always the kind of thing that translates to late-night television. Nevertheless, Hynes gave a striking performance last night on Conan, giving “Augustine” and “Thank You” all the room it needed to breathe, and making the late-night stage feel like the intimate bedroom on the album’s cover. Along with choreographed backing dancers, Hynes’ performance included a photo tribute to Terrance Mack, Philando Castile, and Hande Kader, all of whom were victims of police shootings.
