Netflix has finally confirmed the obvious: Stranger Things will receive a second season. Nine new episodes of the ’80s sci-fi/horror series will air in 2017, the network confirmed today with an eerie new teaser trailer. Update: According to executive producer Shawn Levy, the trailer does in fact reveal the titles to each episode of season two.
In conjunction with the announcement, the show’s creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, spoke to EW.com about what fans can expect from the forthcoming season.
For one, they said the show’s principal cast members — Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) — will return. However, “We don’t know about Eleven,” Ross Duffer added. “We leave that up in the air.”
Additionally, four new characters will be added to the fold and, unlike season one, the series will venture outside of Hawkins, Indiana. “I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins,” Matt Duffer explained.
In regards to the plot, the Duffer Brothers said there are several loose ends from season one “that are unresolved.” As Ross Duffer explained, “I don’t think we ever thought anthology. I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade. That’s something we batted around from the very beginning. But for us, there’s still more story here, there’s still things that are unresolved.”
Specifically, the Duffers want to go further into Things’ alternate dimension, as Matt explained. “We kinda just peeled back the curtain and revealed a tiny bit of the Upside Down. So we definitely want to explore a little bit more. There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of season 1.”
Ross Duffer added, “We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins. And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there? We really don’t go in there much until they go in to find Will at the end. So we’ve opened up this doorway, and to us it’s exciting to talk about, like, what else is behind there? There’s a lot more mystery there to be solved.”
And yes — there will be justice for Barb.
