After raising a question mark regarding his own continued work in music, Rob Crow has made a quite a resurgence in 2016. Following this winter’s debut LP from Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, Crow has resurrected his Lord Phallus persona for a new Goblin Cock record. The gloriously titled Necronomidonkeykongimicon is due out September 2nd via Joyful Noise.
The follow-up to 2008’s Come With Me If You Want To Live! is by and large a protest album. Crow was spurred on to wake the sleeping Goblin Cock after paying witness to how humanity has “made it so increasing hard to for themselves to breathe their own air, eat their own food, love the ones they truly love, or generally have a full life without destroying the lives of innocents,” as a press release put it. The LP’s new single “Your Watch” addresses those final two points of contention.
“Every human on your planet should have the right to gestate/adopt/raise larvae of their own, as long as they are prepared to adapt to the physical, mental, and emotional toll that such a challenge requires with love and a shared responsibility with your chosen partner/partners,” Lord Phallus himself explains to Consequence of Sound. “This one is for those that know and share true exhaustion as a further bond and life experience and also for those with the love and courage to heroically endure when forced to take the burden on by themselves. Just keep going and sleep when/where you can get it.”
You won’t be able to sleep with “Your Watch” on, however. It’s a melodic sludge rocker that rings out with the drowsy grit with which parents everywhere are all too familiar. “I just wanna lie down right here/ I just wanna lie down, oh yea/ I just wanna lie down for a minute,” goes the refrain. But underneath all that exhaustion is the acknowledgment that raising children is one of the greatest jobs in the world, as Phallus sings softly, “I am the lucky one.”
