Zendaya to play Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming

The former Disney singer and dancer will soon be swept off her feet by Tom Holland

    Spider-Man has a love interest.

For months, we’ve known that singer and dancer Zendaya was cast as a “key role” in next summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, playing a mysterious character named Michelle. Well, according to The Wrap, she’s actually playing the ol’ web-head’s most notorious girlfriend and love interest, Mary Jane Watson.

Kirsten Dunst originally brought the character to celluloid for the first three films, while Shailene Woodley was slated to play her in the Andrew Garfield reboots. What’s interesting to note about Zendaya’s casting is that she’s the first iconic role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to switch races for the big screen — pretty cool.

Come next summer, she’ll be swept up by Tom Holland alongside a stellar cast that includes Marisa Tomei returning as Aunt May; Michael Keaton, Logan Marshall-Green, and Bokeem Woodvine as the villains; in addition to strong personalities such as Donald Glover, Martin Starr, Hannibal Buress, and Tony Revolori.

Cop Car director Jon Watts directs from a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, while both Sony’s Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige serve as producers. It should be noted that this is the 16th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and what better way to celebrate the franchise’s Sweet 16.

In related news, it would appear that Holland’s already punching in the clock. During filming in Atlanta, the young actor swung away from the set and visited the nearby Egleston Children’s Hospital to visit a bunch of kids in costume. Several photos have popped up on Instagram, and they’re adorable. What a guy…
