Since forming in the late 2000s, Nashville indie rockers Mona have seen both ends of the music industry spectrum. They did the DIY thing of self-booked tours and grassroots promotion as well as had a taste of the cushy life of VIP green rooms and major label swank. The band’s experiences over the last few years have now led them here: not only with a “renewed sense of purpose” when it comes to musical creativity, but also a deep appreciation for finding the middle ground.
Mona will explore their new muse — this idea of balance — on a forthcoming six-song EP aptly titled In the Middle (October 28th via Bright Antenna). As a first look at their new material, they’ve shared its title track, which frontman Nick Brown describes as “an acknowledgment of dualism — good vs. evil or even just opinion vs opinion.”
“The shades and layers of all things sexual , political, spiritual or whatever… are up to the individual and therefore in our world tend to get very controversial and very personal,” he adds. “This song is toying with shedding those layers and having some balance. Enjoying the ‘middle’ which then leads to enjoying others and their differences.”
Though some may find it difficult to center themselves, Mona do it so convincingly and wholeheartedly on “In the Middle”, a rush of pure adrenaline and anthemic drive. “So you go, go/ A little in the middle / But you know, know/ A little in the middle shouldn’t feel so right, but it feels all right,” Brown rallies during the song’s euphoria-inducing chorus. It’s impossible not to believe him.
