Donald Trump’s rhetoric has ranged from the ignorant to the iniquitous, deplorable almost any way you slice it. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musicals, on the other hand, have consistently been enlightening and engrossing. So what happens when you provide the latter with material from the former and say, “make this sound pretty?” Well, you get Donald Trump: The Musical.
In a video coinciding with his GQ cover story this month, Miranda turns some of Trump’s most famous tweets into songs. While riding atop a New York City tour bus, the playwright and songwriter adds melodies to such classics as, “Happy Cinco De Mayo! The Best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” and “I would like to extend my best wishes to you all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11th.”
Could he have chosen some juicier quotes to pull from? Sure, but even this brief bit makes it clear how great a musical villain Trump could be. Watch the clip below.
As a side note, Miranda was asked in the GQ piece if he had any regrets, and it turns out he skipped his oppurtunity to perform for Prince:
“I missed the chance to perform for Prince. When he came to Hamilton, I went to my friend’s wedding. And my friend is the biggest Prince fan. In fact, I bragged to him, ‘Prince is at my show tonight. I came to your wedding. That’s how much I love you!’ And Prince was gone two months later. I don’t regret going to my friend’s wedding. I wouldn’t have missed that for the world. But, you know, who would have thought we ever had a limited time with Prince?!
