Michael Shannon to star opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in The Current War

Forthcoming drama follows the electrifying rivalry between George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison

Two of Hollywood’s most, ahem, electrifying male actors will star alongside one another in The Current War, with Deadline reporting that Michael Shannon is in negotiations to join Benedict Cumberbatch in the forthcoming period drama about the Thomas Edison-George Westinghouse electricity feud. Set in the late 1880s, the film will star Cumberbatch as Edison and Shannon as Westinghouse, two brilliant and bitter rivals who championed different currents for electric power distribution.

Update: Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has joined the cast playing Edison’s assistant.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is directing the film based on a script by Michael Mitnick. The Weinstein Company production marks the latest spark in a high-voltage year for Shannon, who is also featured in Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals and Werner Herzog’s Salt and Fire. Other forthcoming roles for the in-demand actor include a star turn in Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War fantasy The Shape of Water.
