One’s an Oscar-nominated actress, the other’s a Grammy-nominated songstress; both are set to help tell the tale of America’s 21st century culture on the big screen. Actress Rooney Mara has been tapped to star in Vox Lux, a new film for which Sia will provide new original music.
Mara will play Celeste, a pop singer who rises to superstardom beginning in 1999. The drama will follow her career up until the present day, examining “the major cultural evolutions of the 21st century through her eyes,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film comes from up-and-coming director Brady Corbet, a 28-year-old actor (Thirteen, Funny Games) who made his feature directorial debut with last year’s The Childhood of a Leader. “Brady is a young auteur almost without parallel,” said Steve Bellamy, president of Kodak Motion Picture. “After such an amazing growth year for film in 2015, much like vinyl in the music industry, we are doing everything we can to help find and nurture those next master craftsmen like Brady. They will shortly become the future P.T. Andersons, Christopher Nolans, Quentin Tarantinos, J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielbergs, etc.”
Corbet will shoot the film in 65mm large format and it will be screened in 70mm, both formats which have gained new notoriety thanks to Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Production is set to begin this February.
