Mother Nature’s fierce grips nearly killed Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant, but he’s willing to fight on her behalf once more. The longtime environmental activist’s Appian Way Productions is teaming up with Paramount to bring ’90s cartoon series Captain Planet to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original program, which aired from 1990 to 1992, focused on a group of five young crusaders who could summon the almighty pollution-fighting Captain Planet with their magical rings representing earth, wind, heart, fire, and water. Sons of Anarchy affiliate Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell are being considered to pen the script; it’s unclear whether Powell, who recently appeared in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some, will also take on an acting role in the Captain Planet movie.
As THR points out, Matt and Powell’s early plot for the film involved a noticeably dark twist on the TV show. “Sources say the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.”

In addition to Captain Planet, DiCaprio also spearheaded the new climate change documentary Before the Flood, which features an original soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, along with Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Make a Murderer) and post-rock veterans Mogwai.
