Between new responsibilities, expectations, and aspirations, settling into adulthood can often feel like walking through a field riddled with landmines –there are real consequences for wrong decisions and things don’t always play out the way we envisioned them to. It’s easy to be turned off by the whole thing, but for some folks, like The Youngest, it’s an opportunity for growth and positive change.

The rising Chicago outfit tackle the subject matter on their latest single, “Make Me New”, which features keys from Pat Sansone of Wilco. “I never looked up ‘cause I didn’t care/ About most everything,” The Youngest frontman Andrew Taetz sings on the sweetly rolling ballad, whose textures and earnestness at times evoke early Fleet Foxes. “And then you came along/ Please make me new.”

Guitarist John Quinn tells Consequence of Sound that “Make Me New” is about “cautious optimism in the face of the abyss of adulthood and the hope that who we are now is not the person we will always be.” He adds, “It’s a song about meeting a future version of yourself — a person who is everything you’ve fought for and struggled to be — and having faith that even though hopes and dreams may not conform to the timeframes you may want them to, everything will work out as it should.”
