The Walking Dead makes a killer reference to Omar from The Wire in next week’s episode — watch

When you hear that whistle, you know Omar comin'

The guys behind AMC’s zombie smash The Walking Dead love themselves a good easter egg. They stuff their show full of famous undead walkers, and have made so many references to Breaking Bad that there’s a viable theory that Walter White caused the zombie apocalypse. Their latest hat tip to other TV hits should send you running back inside behind your boarded up windows.

TWD series creator Robert Kirkman and showrunner Scott M. Gimple have made no mystery of their appreciation for The Wire, hiring three of the HBO drama’s stars for their own program (Chad L. Coleman as Tyreese, Lawrence Gilliard Jr. as Bob, and Seth Gilliam as Father Gabriel). Now it seems their next episode will feature a nice little nod to one of The Wire’s most enduring characters, Omar Little.

As you can see in the teaser clip above, TWD’s Michonne is stalking a lonely stretch of road by herself, whistling a familiar tune. Those are the notes of “The Farmer in the Dell”, the same song Omar would whistle as he hunted down his prey on the streets of Baltimore. It’s a nice homage from savage killer to another, and you can watch it up top. Hear Omar’s version below.
