Though season 2 of True Detective was a bit of a letdown, fans continue to hold out hope that the third iteration of Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO crime drama will reach the gloriously disturbed highs of the acclaimed first season. Matthew McConaughey, who starred in that first season as troubled detective Rustin “Rust” Cohle, gave those fans something to chew on when he stopped by The Rich Eisen Show on Friday to promote his new animated film, Sing.
At one point during the show, Eisen brought up the topic of True Detective and remarked on McConaughey’s clear affection for the character of Cohle. “You essentially said you wanted to play Rust Cohle when you saw the script,” he said. “You were originally going to go for Marty [Hart, played by Woody Harrelson] and then you were like, ‘This guy Rustin Cohle really speaks to me.’”
“I can’t wait to hear what comes out of his mouth,” McConaughey agreed.
Eisen then asked McConaughey point-blank if he was gearing up to reprise the role on True Detective season three, and the actor insisted that the “ball’s not advanced at all. I’ve talked to the creator Nic Pizzolatto, who’s taking a little break from it.”
McConaughey went on to say that “if that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.” Obviously nothing is confirmed yet, but that’s pretty exciting news for fans who though the series lost something essential with McConaughey’s departure.
