Back in October, a new hardcore supergroup comprised of Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover of The Melvins, At The Drive-In’s Omar Rodríguez-López, and Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes made themselves known. Calling themselves Crystal Fairy, the band spent the final months of 2016 teasing a full-length album with ferocious scorchers like “Drugs on the Bus” and “Chiseler.” Now, with their self-titled LP roughly a month from dropping, they’re gracing us with the album’s title track.
“Crystal Fairy” first premiered on the BBC 6 Music Show late Friday night, with guest host Henry Rollins (filling in for Iggy Pop) dropping the track.
In a press release, Gender Bender likens the song to an aural panic attack: “Panic attacks are man’s worst enemy but our most powerful mental invention, somehow we’ve managed to use them to calm our nerves down and let the music flow. Sometimes the agony within the self makes it appropriate to let the jittery hands do the storytelling.”
“Crystal Fairy” is a gritty, rip-roaring ode to ‘80s thrash, with Gender Bender’s breathy shout tripping along breakneck guitar solos. Listen to it below:
Crystal Fairy is slated for a February 24 release via Ipecac Recordings.
