Millions of people around the world hit the streets on Saturday to participate in the Women’s March. Among the participants were a number of musicians: The National, Tegan and Sara, Courtney Barnett, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, Pearl Jam, Radiohead’s Nigel Godrich, Regina Spektor, Grimes, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein, HAIM, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O., Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Beach House, Bat For Lashes, Natalie Prass, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk, U2’s The Edge, Juliette Lewis Rihanna, and Miley Cyrus, among others.
Additionally, Janelle Monáe, Alicia Keys, and Madonna spoke and performed at the March on Washington. Joined by the mothers of Eric Garner, Mohamed Bah and Dontre Hamilton – three victims of police-related deaths, Monáe performed “Hell You Talmbout”. Keys sang “Girl on Fire” and Madonna ran through “Express Yourself” and “Human Nature” in between a controversial, profanity-laced speech.
