The Avett Brothers cover George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” on Colbert — watch

A fitting tribute to ideals otherwise absent on a farcical Inauguration Day

The Avett Brothers released an album called True Sadness last summer, but little did they know how prescient that title would be. The band — along with most of the rest of America — experienced some very true sadness last night in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration. But rather than wallow in misery, they chose to commemorate the occasion with a special, politically charged cover of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” on Colbert. At a time when “love” and “peace on earth” seem like impossible ideals to achieve, these are the types of performances we need.
