Comedy Central renews South Park through 2022

Cartman & co. will be around for at least another three seasons

South Park

Break out the cheesy poofs and crème fraîche and be prepared to respect Eric Cartman’s authority for another three seasons. Comedy Central has just renewed South Park through 2022.

Today’s announcement confirms that Cartman, Stan, Kyle and the rest of South Park’s residents will be on the air at least through a 26th (!) season. The renewal news also means that come 2022, the series’ total episode count will sit at a whopping 327.

As it stands right now, the show is already the longest-running animated series right behind The Simpsons, as well as the longest-running prime-time scripted series in cable, per Entertainment Weekly. Since its debut way back in 1997, it’s earned 18 Emmy nominations, including four wins; it most recently took home the prize for Outstanding Animated Program in 2013.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone talked about the latest renewal and how much longer they think they’ll be pumping out South Park episodes.

“I don’t think we have ever had an ‘OK, let’s sit down and decide if we are going to keep going,'” Parker remarked. Added Stone, “I am 48. Trey turns 50 this year. So I will say that I don’t think we will be doing this show when we’re 60.”

The renewal comes just a few months after the 20th anniversary of the South Park film, Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Parker and Stone commented that while they’re still committed to the TV medium, they have been itching to do another movie.

“We think of ourselves as filmmakers, and it’s like, everyone is doing TV now,” said Stone. “It’s like, movies, even though the movie business is all fucked up. And everyone will tell you don’t go into movies. We just want to do a movie.”

The pair is also knocking around “really fucking killer ideas” for non-South Park material.

But until then, Parker and Stone remain focused on their Comedy Central series, whose 23rd season debuts later this month on September 25th. The upcoming season will feature the show’s 300th episode.
