Rush’s seminal 1981 album Moving Pictures is receiving a 40th anniversary deluxe reissue. The collection is due out April 15th.
Moving Pictures remains Rush’s most well-known album, housing massive FM hits such as “Tom Sawyer” and “Limelight” as well as the legendary instrumental “YYZ.” It saw the band melding their progressive-rock tendencies with radio friendly arrangements — to much commercial success. The LP has been certified five-times platinum, having shifted over five million units in the US alone.
That number is about to increase. The Moving Pictures reissue will be released in multiple packages across different formats: a Super Deluxe Edition, 3-CD Deluxe Edition, 5-LP Deluxe Edition, 1-LP edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, and a Dolby Atmos Digital Edition.
For the hardcore Rush fan, the Super Deluxe Edition presents a variety of ways to listen to the album. It includes three CDs, one Blu-ray Audio disc, and five heavyweight vinyl LPs.
The set compiles the Abbey Road Mastering Studios 2015 remastered edition of the album for the first time on CD, along with two discs of previously unreleased and newly restored bonus live recordings mixed from the original analog multi-tracks by Rush producer Terry Brown. It also features the band’s complete, unreleased Toronto concert from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, on March 25, 1981 (entitled “Live in YYZ 1981”).
The Blu-ray Audio disc includes the core album newly mixed from the original multi-tracks in Dolby Atmos — a first in the Rush catalog — Dolby TrueHD 5.1, and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound by producer/engineer Richard Chycki. The previously available PCM Stereo mix is also on the disc, along with four bonus videos: a brand-new clip for “YYZ” plus three remastered vintage promo videos for “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” and “Vital Signs.”
Additionally, all of the vinyl in the Super Deluxe Edition has been cut via half-speed Direct to Metal Mastering (DMM) — another Rush first — on five 180-gram LPs.
When Moving Pictures turned 40 last year, we invited some major rock drummers to reflect on the immeasurable importance of the record. Charlie Benante, Mike Portnoy, Matt Halpern, and Arejay Hale all participated in the round table discussion, which you can watch above.
Together, the four drummers eloquently discussed the impact Rush’s music had on them, the importance of Moving Pictures in rock history, the intricacies of songs like “Tom Sawyer” and “YYZ”, and most passionately, what Neil Peart meant to them individually as drummers, and how they were impacted by his passing in January 2020.
