Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for Banshees of Inisherin starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and a friendship breakup has never looked funnier.

Set on a tiny island off the coast of Ireland, the film tells the story of Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson), who have been lifelong best friends. Except, well, lifelong isn’t exactly accurate after the latter decides to abruptly end the friendship.

“Now if I’ve done something to ya, just tell me what I’ve done to ya,” a confused Pádraic implores before Colm bluntly replies, “Well you didn’t do anything to me. I just don’t like you no more.” The former’s hilariously baffled response? “But you liked me yesterday…”

From there, the pals’ breakup only gets more complicated, with Pádraic’s sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and a young troublemaker named Dominic (Barry Keoghan) getting involved in the fallout.

However, when Farrell’s character just won’t give up, his former friend hands down a disturbing ultimatum: “If you don’t stop talkin’ to me and if you don’t stop botherin’ me, I have a set of shears at home, and each time you bother me from this day on, I’ll take those shears and I’ll take one of me fingers off with them, and I’ll give that finger to ya until I have no fingers left.”

Written, directed, and produced by Martin McDonagh, the dark comedy is British-Irish filmmaker’s first follow-up to 2017’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which took home four Golden Globes, five BAFTAs, three SAG Awards, and two Academy Awards.

In other news, Farrell will next star in the real-life rescue drama Thirteen Lives directed by Ron Howard. Meanwhile, his fan favorite — and Danny DeVito-approved — portrayal as Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman earlier this year has earned the green light for a spin-off about the supervillain for HBO Max.
