Nicki Minaj was the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards‘ Video Vanguard Award recipient, and she celebrated the honor by performing a career-spanning medley at the ceremony. Watch a clip of the medley below.
Marking her first VMAs performance since 2018, Nicki ran through “Moment 4 Life,” “Beez in the Trap,” “Chun-Li,” her iconic “Monster” verse, and more while donning her go-to hot pink. Taylor Swift rapped along in the audience to “Super Bass,” and after “Anaconda,” Minaj debuted her latest single, the Rick James-sampling “Super Freaky Girl.”
Nicki pulled triple duty at this year’s VMAs: In addition to performing, she co-hosted the show with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow, and she was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which celebrates an artist’s contributions to music videos and popular culture with a special gold Moon Person. MJ, Madonna, Missy Elliott, and other superstars have received the award in years past. In what was probably a life-making moment, a group of devoted Barbz awarded their queen with the Moon Person before she thanked all the artists who helped her get her crown.
Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” was nominated for Song of the Summer at this year’s VMAs, while Minaj also won the Best Hip-Hop award at this year’s show for her song “Do We Have a Problem?,” which features Lil Baby. Soon after dropping that song, the duo teamed up again for the single “Bussin.” The rapper will next headline Rolling Loud New York alongside Future and A$AP Rocky; grab tickets to that event here.
