Melina Duterte, the Los Angeles-based musician, began recording music under the name Jay Som -- taken from a baby name generator and meaning “Victory Moon” -- in her bedroom while she was in college. She first uploaded music to her Bandcamp page in late 2015, a collection of nine demos called Untitled that would later be given official releases under the title Turn Into by both Topshelf Records and Polyvinyl Records. The attention she received for Turn Into earned her opening spots for artists like Peter Bjorn and John, Mitski, and Japanese Breakfast. Duterte’s first proper album as Jay Som, Everybody Works, arrived via Polyvinyl in early 2017, featuring varied styles and rich instrumentation, though Duterte recorded everything herself. In June of 2019, she announced that her follow-up, Anak Ko -- meaning “my child” in Tagalog came out on August 23, powered by leading single “Superbike”
