John Malkovich joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the upcoming Apple TV+ series, The New Look, which tells the story of life in Nazi-occupied France and post-WWII Europe through the lives of fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Malkovich — the legendary actor known for films like Being John MalkovichCon Air, and Of Mice and Men — portrays Lucien Lelong, a French couturier who was a mentor of Dior (among other iconic designers). He explains his role in the show, dives into how it delves into the compromises many people had to make in order to survive, and ultimately how choices during the time were rarely easy.

Archer’s H. Jon Benjamin on Saying Goodbye to the FX Series (and What He Won’t Miss)

On Sunday, December 17th, the animation dynasty known as <a href=”https://consequence.net/tag/archer&#8221; target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”><i>Archer</i></a> comes to an end; the animated spy comedy, created by <a href=”https://consequence.net/tag/adam-reed/&#8221; target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Adam Reed</a>, reached its 14th season this year, with the three-part finale <i>Archer: Into the Cold</i> bringing the story of Sterling Archer (<a href=”https://consequence.net/tag/h-jon-benjamin/&#8221; target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>H. Jon Benjamin</a>) and his fellow agents to a conclusion.

“It’s hard to end the show, for sure,” Benjamin tells <i>Consequence</i>, saying that he and the rest of the <i>Archer</i> cast learned about the show ending on a group call organized by executive producers Matt Thompson and Casey Willis. “It was kind of a shock, but at the same time, it’s just very unusual for a show to keep going. And year to year, there was always uncertainty as to whether or not the show was going to go another season.”

Benjamin adds that “<i>Archer</i> kind of technically was going to come to an end after Adam Reed left the show in Season 10. After that, I think it was sort of more of a ‘How long do we have left?’ I think they did a really admirable job of recreating the show in the wake of Adam, who was the creative force behind it, for the remaining four seasons. But I think once Adam left, it was maybe a little bit more like, ‘Well, I wonder how long the show can last?’ There’s animated shows that go on for 30 years, so you never know.”

Benjamin teases that <i>Into the Cold</i> reflects, in a way, the show’s own occasionally precarious history: “In the world of the show, [the spy agency] has always been on the chopping block. So the natural ending for things is going to be like, ‘What’s gonna happen when the agency dissolves, and what’s going to happen to all these characters?’ So, it’s gonna be what happens when everything falls apart. All the characters have gone through so much over the course of the life of the show, and they tend to keep landing on their feet, but the finale definitely explores a real existential crisis for the agency.”

It’s the conclusion of a journey that began with the show’s original premiere in 2009, kicking off a decade-plus run of anarchy anchored by Benjamin alongside one of TV’s strongest voice casts (including Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates, and the late great Jessica Walter).

One fun fact about <i>Archer</i> is that Benjamin never had to audition for the title role, instead receiving a direct offer for the series. “I remember how surprised I was,” he says. “It’s really pretty rare I’d get an offer — certainly at that time — so I might have been like, ‘Is this a mistake or something?'”

In fact, Benjamin says that he definitely remembers “being a little bit concerned that I wasn’t going to be able to play a spy well — I thought maybe I would have to be doing a different character than I had normally done, because my prior work was pretty much my natural voice and a lot of improvisation. So I was like, ‘I wonder why they’re choosing me for a spy?'”

<!–nextpage–>

The reason why, it turned out, was that Thompson and Reed were already fans of his, and used some of his performance as another character to animate an <i>Archer</i> test sequence for the execs. That character? Coach John McGuirk from the 1999-2003 comedy <i>Home Movies</i>, “this drunken elementary school soccer coach,” Benjamin laughs. “I guess for them, that embodied what Archer became — this bombastic, arrogant, drunken spy. They saw that and that’s what made it work.”

Adds Benjamin, “They sold me — they did all the work for me. Which was very sweet.”

As a voice actor, Benjamin never had to actually perform any of the outrageous stunts executed by the spy over 14 seasons. However, playing Archer did take a physical toll. “There were many, many episodes where my voice started to give out, for sure,” he says. “That was very common. I don’t want to emphasize the difficulty of voice acting — it’s not particularly difficult — but the volume which Archer would have to be at for a two-hour session, I would literally lose my voice yelling. I would always be like, ‘Oh no,’ when I saw a stage direction like ‘on a motorcycle, yelling’ or ‘gun battle, yelling over.’ Archer yelled <i>a lot</i>.”

The “least fun” part of the process, Benjamin says, was providing the sort of grunts and groans that would accompany an action scene. “I hated that part,” he laughs, remembering how he’d perform 30 seconds worth of those noises, “then I’d stop and [ask] ‘How long do you want me to go?'”

The response: “‘Well, you’re falling down a 500-foot cliff, so we need a good three and a half minutes.'” Says Benjamin, “A lot of fight scenes, I would be like, ‘How come you guys can’t just pull from the library of fight scenes sounds from before? Why do I have to keep doing it?’ And they were like, ‘It’s a different fight.'”

Looking forward, Benjamin says that while he’s made limited appearances as a live-action actor over the years, he will probably try to do more roles like that, now that “I’m down to one animated show.” (He still plays the titular Bob of <i>Bob’s Burgers</i> on Fox, which was <a href=”https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/the-simpsons-bobs-burgers-family-guy-renewed-fox-1235503506/&#8221; target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>renewed this year through Season 15.) </a>

“I think I get more work voice acting just because I’ve been voice acting now for like 25 years, and been on a lot of long-running shows. So that’s what I’m mostly known for,” he notes. “But whenever I get asked, I’m up for it. I just get asked a lot less for live-action.”

In the meantime, he’s working on his third album as Jazz Daredevil, a jazz pianist character he created who <i>might</i> be terrible at playing jazz piano. “I’m kind of excited about that, although I have no idea how it’s gonna come out. I think it will be interesting… Controversial,” he adds with a laugh.

And, in the meantime, he says, “I feel like I’m gonna start looking for a new job.”

<i>Archer: Into the Cold</i> premieres Sunday, December 17 at 10:00 pm ET/PT on FX and FXX, and streams the next day on Hulu.

Sublime to Reunite with Bradley Nowell’s Son, Jakob, at Coachella 2024

The Coachella 2024 lineup is here in all of its glory, and joining headliners Lana Del Rey, Tyler the Creator, and Doja Cat will be two special ‘90s reunions: No Doubt and Sublime, the latter of which will perform with Jakob Nowell, son of the band’s original frontman, Bradley Nowell.

[appletv-embed url=’https://embed.tv.apple.com/us/show/masters-of-the-air/umc.cmc.7bxcni0vwgll9kmicq738k5q2?itscg=30200&itsct=consequence_tv&at=1001l36gv&ct=cover_mastersoftheair’%5D

The reunited Sublime first came together in December 2023, when the band’s original bassist and drummer — Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, respectively — enlisted Jakob to perform with them at a benefit concert for Bad Brains’ frontman, H.R. At the show, the trio was billed as “A special performance by Jakob Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh,” but now, they have formally “reunited,” and will be playing as Sublime, right and proper.

As exciting as the reunion is, though, it isn’t too much of a surprise. After the trio announced their performance last month, the team that manages Sublime’s business and legacy assets hinted that a more formal reunion was in the cards. Then, a few days after the performance itself, Wilson’s Sublime-honoring side project, Sublime with Rome, announced that they would disband after finishing out their 2024 tour commitments.

Kevin Zinger, a rep for Jakob, said at the time that the reunited Sublime was “patiently waiting and doing the right thing,” adding: “If the vibe’s there, the vibe’s there.” Now, it seems like the vibe is, indeed, “there.”

In a new statement, Jakob expressed sentimental feelings about the reunion. “This has so many layers for me,” he said. “On a spiritual level, my father passed away when he was 28, and I am 28 now. It’s an honor to carry on with our family’s name and legacy with Sublime. I’ve been a performing musician with my own projects since I was 18. It’s an absolute privilege to be able to play these Sublime songs with legendary musicians like Eric and Bud. On a personal level, my Uncles Bud and Eric are meant to play these songs and the fans want to hear them. I’m excited, nervous, thankful, and humbled all at the same time to step into this role and start this new chapter. It feels like my big crazy family is finally back together and I couldn’t be more happy.”

[stubhub-link title=”Get Coachella 2024 Tickets Here” pubref=”sublime*officially-reunite-for-coachella-button” link=”https://www.stubhub.com/coachella-music-festival-tickets/grouping/11247″%5D

As for Wilson and Gaugh, it seems they’re just as happy as Jakob is. “I knew I would be playing music with Eric again at some point, that was never a doubt,” Gaugh said, alluding to his 2011 departure from Sublime with Rome. “But to be playing music with Eric and Jakob, it’s very reminiscent of those early days in Brad’s dad’s garage in a surrealistic kinda way. With Jake’s raw talent and the solid rhythm foundation Eric and I provide, this train is bound for glory!”

Echoing Gaugh’s sentiment, Wilson said: “This is great because I haven’t had the opportunity to play with Bud Gaugh in over a decade; and to have Brad’s son playing our music is the closest thing possible to playing with my old buddy Brad.”

In addition to Coachella 2024, a press release announced that Sublime will also play “additional music festivals in 2024,” but no further details are available at this time.

Mumford & Sons Team Up With Pharrell For “Good People”: Stream

Mumford & Sons have combined forces with Pharrell Williams for “Good People,” the group’s first slice of new music since 2019. Stream it below.

Built from a stomping groove, a soulful choir, and escalating chords, “Good People” is a rousing return to Mumford & Sons’ fire-and-brimstone, old-school-folk approach — though for this one, they’ve kept the banjo back at home. “Welcome to the revelation,” goes the Pharrell-led choir throughout, with frontman Marcus Mumford narrating “Good people/ Been down/ For so long/ And now/ It’s like the sun is rising” in the chorus.

A collaboration that no one asked for and few saw coming, Mumford & Sons and Pharrell notably connected at the latter’s Something In the Water Festival last year, where they cemented plans to record something together. In addition to the song’s production, Pharrell Williams fronts the choir comprised of the Native Vocalists, a six-piece vocal group featuring members of several Native American tribes throughout the US and Canada. “Good People” will also get its live debut tonight (January 16th) at Pharrell’s Louis Vuitton Men’s Autumn/Winter runway show at Paris Fashion Week, where the band will perform alongside Williams and the Native Vocalists.

Mumford & Sons’ most recent offering was 2019’s standalone single “Blind Leading the Blind”. Their last album was 2018’s Delta. Since then, the group parted ways with original banjo player Winston Marshall, and Marcus Mumford released his 2022 debut solo album, (self-titled).

No Doubt Are Reuniting At Coachella

No Doubt are reuniting.

On Tuesday, January 16th, the band’s official Twitter page shared a video confirming that the classic four-piece lineup — featuring Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont, and Adrian Young — will play together once again,  with the quartet all agreeing to “do a show.” More details have yet to be announced. Update: It’s been confirmed that the band will perform at Coachella 2024.

The minute-long video begins with Stefani showing off collage artwork she made for the band’s second album, The Beacon Street Collection. After reminiscing on those times — feeling “so nostalgic” — she tells the camera that she’s “gonna text Tony [Kanal] right now.” We then see her iPhone text screen as she coordinates a video call with Kanal and “the guys.”

Cutting to the video call, all four members of the band’s classic lineup are there. After a bit of “Woah,” “What’s up?” “How are you?” and comical cartoon sound effects, Stefani asks the band: “What are we doing? Why do we not hang out?” Kanal responds “We should hang out,” and then Young asks: “Maybe we should do a show?” Young’s bandmates agree, and the beloved quartet all express their excitement to “do a show.”

The clip then ends with a large, red question mark, basically amounting to a “More details to come soon” notice. Watch the video below.

First formed in 1986, No Doubt released five studio albums during their initial run, with songs like the 1995 hit “Just a Girl” becoming an integral part of the pop-punk canon. In the early 2000s, the band embarked on a hiatus, but reunited in 2008 to tour and make another album, 2012’s Push and Shove. They stayed together for a few more years, but after some sporadic shows in 2014 and 2015, the group disbanded again.

In the time since then, a No Doubt reunion hasn’t always seemed likely. In 2016, Stefani told Rolling Stone that she was dissatisfied with Push and Shove and felt creative differences made the band’s future uncertain. In 2022, though, she softened a bit, hinting that a reunion could be possible, and citing the success of Blink-182 in recent years as an indicator that audiences want more ‘90s nostalgia.

Now, No Doubt are back for their third run, and though no additional shows nor new releases have been confirmed, a headlining set at Coachella is certainly something for fans to look forward to. Joining them on the lineup will be another reunion of a legendary ‘90s band: Sublime, who will play with Jakob Nowell, the son of original frontman, Bradley Nowell. Check out the full lineup for Coachella 2024 here.
