The cast of the brilliant HBO sketch-comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David is reuniting for a Zoom charity event. One of the funny people taking part in the reunion is comedian Brian Posehn, whom we happened to interview in person before the pandemic hit.
Previously, we shared Part 1 of our video interview with Posehn, in which the comedian talked about his hilarious new album, Grandpa Metal, a parody music LP that features contributions from Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Slayer’s Gary Holt, and more.
With the virtual Mr. Show reunion taking place Wednesday (May 13th), what better time to unveil Part 2 of the interview, where Posehn reflects on his Mr. Show days, and discusses his collaborations with the series’ creators, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross.
“I moved down to L.A. and was already friends with David Cross, and then I met Bob Odenkirk,” recalled Posehn. “And I looked up to those guys, because I wanted to get into sketch writing … [The] Ben Stiller [Show] had ended, and they started working on sketches that became Mr. Show, and I just was hanging out, and I got cast in some of them. And then they asked my opinion on the writing, and was just like, ‘Well, it’s awesome!’ … I knew I was around for something special.”
Posehn then went on to praise the work that Cross and Odenkirk have done since, especially singling out the “genius” of Odenkirk, who now plays the lead role in Better Call Saul. “Of all the people I’ve ever worked with — the word ‘genius’ gets thrown around a lot — [Bob Odenkirk] is a legit genius. The smartest, funniest, weirdest guy I’ve ever been around.”
The comedian also mentioned the recent Netflix reboot With Bob and David and expressed hopes that there’ll be some more Mr. Show in the future, once Odenkirk is done with Better Call Saul.
