Tenacious D continue to melt faces more than a quarter century into their career. The duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut album with a “Super Power Party Pack” release, featuring a bevy of goodies.
Heavy Consequence recently had the honor of chatting with Black and Gass over video Zoom. In our previously shared segments from the conversation, the pair clarified which song is the indeed the greatest in the world and sung the praises of Nirvana and Dave Grohl.
In the new video segment above, the duo discuss their origins, the impact Bob Odenkirk and David Cross had on their career, and how recently retired legendary sportscaster Marv Albert played an important role in the band’s name. They also talk about whether they’d endorse a Tenacious D hologram tour, as well as the chances of a sequel to their cult-favorite movie Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.
Black got one of his early breaks on the acclaimed HBO comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David, memorably starring in the incredible “Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star” musical sketch, and appearing in other skits.
“That time in comedy in Los Angeles, it kind of coincided with … the alternative rock movement,” Black told us. “There was this alternative comedy movement that kind of went hand in hand, I thought. And Bob and David were at the eye of the hurricane. Mr. Show was the coolest, raddest, most groundbreaking show, a lot of people said, since Monty Python’s Flying Circus. … That was just the place to be. … It was exciting.”
He added, “We were very fortunate to get that little entrez vous onto HBO, because it took us to another level. So, we owe [Bob and David] our souls!”
Gass and Black were part of the same acting troupe before forming Tenacious D, and they actually clashed a bit before developing the bond and friendship that has lasted all these years. “I think I was just threatened by Jack,” remarked Gass. “He came in pretty hard and strong. But it was obvious that this guy’s got some rocket sauce going, and I want some. And I think it was a natural fit at the time.”
As for a sequel to Pick of Destiny, we’ll let you see what Black and Gass tell us in the video above — but prepare to brace yourself for Tenacious D in the Bong of Destiny … maybe!
